Cherry Sign Off With Emphatic Win

Cherry Burton completed their season with an emphatic victory against a very hard working North Cave team.

Once again Cherry have had a succesful season that has seen them promoted for the second year running and reach the Quarter Final of the cup where they were beaten by the eventual winners.

Overall Cherry won 20 of the 24 games they have played scoring an amazing 153 goals in the process. In total 18 players were used of which 14 scored at least one goal which is a tremendous achievement. Manager Phil Davis said the success was down to the hard work and positive attitude of all the players who were a credit to him and the other coaches.

The continued support received from Parents and others from the touchline also proved a big help.

Cherry started the game strongly and scored their first goal in the first minute when a cross from Owen Parnaby was turned in by Bradley Maffin. Cherry continued to dominate with the midfield of Reece Moore, Matthew Phillips and Maffin causing the opposition plenty of problems.

However resolute defending meant chances were limited and the only opportunities were shots from Thomas Scarborough and Phillips.  North Cave looked dangerous on the break and could have equalised if not for a superb recovering tackle from Charles Williams and shortly after a good stop by keeper Harry Milner.

Apart from these two chances the rest of the defence of Harry Hemphill, Matthew Jenkins and Alec Miller stopped everything that came at them. Despite dominating the half Cherry went into the break only one up.

The second half was just the same and after ten minutes the only shot on goal came from a Parnaby snap shot. At the other end Cherry had keeper Milner to thank on a couple of occasions making two world class saves.

Finally Cherry increased their lead when Parnaby jinked between two defenders before releasing a low shot into the far corner. This goal seemed to relax Cherry and with the introduction of Jack Curtis they now looked as if they would score with every attack. In fact Cherry scored their last four goals in the final ten minutes. First a long range shot from Harry Davis made it 3-0.

Next a mazy run from Joe Hibbs ended with Curtis heading home at the far post.  Good work from Josh Darley and Elbie Laurie found Jenkins in space and although his shot was parried by the North Cave keeper Curtis was on hand and once again headed home. Curtis then completed his hat-trick with the final goal of the game coolly lobbing the keeper and two defenders to round off a fine team performance and end another brilliant season.
