Every Little Thing We Do Is Magic

More than 40 young people aged 16 to 30 took part in a training event in Beverley to prepare them for the implementation of their youth led volunteering project this summer.

They are hitting the East Riding and 5 major festivals when they will be helping the organisers put on spectacular events thanks to the support of the British Council and the Youth in Action Programme.

During the event they welcomed John Hotowka, international motivational speaker and magician who came to inspire and educate the participants as they will be entertaining visitors to the events with magic tricks and sneaky stunts.

Angels in Action is a unique European funded project organised and implemented by young people who are passionate about getting involved in exciting opportunities in the community to benefit all concerned.  The idea originated from a citizenship project they were involved in back in 2010 when they worked with a team of young volunteers in Bologna, Italy called ‘’Angeli alle fermate’ or ‘Angels at the Bus stop’.

The participants will be fulfilling a number of thematic tasks from mid-June in what is the European Commission’s European Year of Volunteering 2011.

These include being part of a ‘Green Team’ to promote environmental awareness, entertaining visitors with on-the-spot-magic, mini quizzes about Europe, face painting, hair braiding and putting on an entire youth concert to enable other young people to showcase their talent.

In addition to this, they are also promoting the European Voluntary Service (EVS) to all 18 to 30 year olds through which they can volunteer abroad for up to 12 months for free as we now have a Sending Organisation based in the East Riding.

Agnieszka Szymanska, one of the key organisers of the project said, ‘this has been a fantastic experience for me and I have really enjoyed getting involved with the planning and promoting of Angels in Action. It’s so important for us all to make a positive contribution to our communities and it has been an absolute pleasure to be on board this Youth Initiative’.

Sue Dudill, Coach and Youth in Action promoter added, ‘if you see us out and about this summer, do come over and say hello, find out what we’ve been doing and we’ll be pleased to share our story with you. You’ll recognise us easily enough with our beautiful feathered wings and matching t-shirts. The young people are very motivated and deeply involved in this; I am so proud to be supporting them.’
