Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, has called for the Olympic torch relay to visit Beverley on its nationwide tour in June 2012.
The East Riding capital was not included among the first locations of the Olympic torch relay for next summer to Graham’s dismay.
He said: “The torch relay is about showing off the pride of Britain, and Beverley is a shining example for the world to see. It has a rich culture, beautiful buildings, and is home to top educational institutions.”
And Graham added: “Bishop Burton College, for example, is where a great deal of equestrian and pentathlon training for the Games is taking place.
“There is no doubt the torch passing through the area would be an inspiration for students taking part in this once-in-a-lifetime event for Yorkshire.”
Graham said the torch should come through Beverley and Bishop Burton on its way to York on June 19 next year.
He has already written to tourism body Yorkshire Gold and the Olympic Committee calling for the torch to pass through both Beverley and Bishop Burton.
The nationwide tour is to commemorate the beginning of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
It is expected the route of the torch will be made public by the end of June.
