Under eights – Beverley Braves under eights had a quick look into the future on Tuesday night when they were able to field two teams against Skirlaugh bulls and that future looks very bright indeed.
One team consisted of players who move up to under nines next season and the other of those who will again qualify as under eights in
2012. In the match with the younger starlets Alexie Rawlings and birthday boy Ellis Gaden scored a brace of tries each with speed and great
footwork, the elusive Charlie Barker and Lewis Bradley both got long range efforts (Lewis’s first for the Braves) and Jacob Parkinson Barged
over from 10 metres which was a great effort considering the 6 year old also did 20 tackles in the match.
Sam Shrimpton defended exceptionally well on debut but the star of the match went to the ever improving Fergus Waddington who showed the
crowd some sublime ball skills and ran the ball strongly in a 7-1 rout.
The older boys also went very well in their game winning 11-3, some wonderful tries were scored but it was the defensive effort which
was the most pleasing aspect in this win.
A man short for the entire match the boys worked like Trojans for each other in the tackle preventing the offload and restricting their opponents to just 3 tries. In attack the Braves were quite simply unstoppable, some neat acting half play and passing at first receiver enabled them to pour forward time after time , Mr and Mrs Nuttall will be dishing out the pocket money this week as the twins Tom and Alex both scored hat tricks as did the returning and tanned William Cohen. Adam Greenwood and Charlie Gay got the other two.
It was such a good team performance that no trophies were handed out.
Keep up the hard work.
Under nines Beverley Braves and Skirlaugh Bulls under nines served up a great game of mini mod rugby league on Wednesday evening at the leisure centre. With defences on top much of the credit must go to the top tacklers in the game and on the Braves team Lewis Egan, Oliver Loney and Ethan Rowbotham took on the Bulls down the middle well. On the wings George Lees and William Snook made sure nothing got past them with some copy book tackling.
With the defence holding tight the Braves were taken forward with strong drives by Joseph Denis and Ryan Deane whilst Tom Marr, Tom Newton and the jinking Dylan English also made some hard yards during the game.
Inevitably it was William Wallis who opened the scoring to make it 1 nil to the Braves with a typically strong run. The Bulls hit back straight away with a try from a player with a name linked with the Bulls since their formation, Mcnamara. It was going to take something special to open up either defence and that was provided when Marcus Walker dummied before racing through the gap he created.
2-1 at half-time and the Braves had to continue in the same vein in order to get anything out of the game. It was the Bulls who scored first however to make it 2all. Tom Cohen took the ball up well before an awkward fall finished his game prematurely. Wallis then barged through for his second to push Beverley back in front only for Skirlaugh to draw level again. Man of the match Wallis hit back this time racing away straight from the re-start. Sustained pressure on the Beverley line finally told allowing the Bulls in for their fourth and
they were pressing again as the final whistle sounded. Final score 4 – 4
