St Georges FC triumphed on a perfect day for the ever-popular Mike Gaden Football Fives tournament held at Beverley Rugby Club yesterday (Sunday).
More than 20 teams from Beverley and beyond slugged it out in intense heat, to the pleasure of large numbers of supporters enjoying an afternoon in the sun.
The competition is run by Beverley Town FC, for whom Mike Gaden played before his death in 1999.
Chairman Raoul Lempriere was delighted with the support for the event and paid tribute to the efforts of the volunteers who made the day go so well.
Raoul told HU17.net: “I would echo what I said during the presentation that I would like to thank all the players who turned up, as without them we wouldn’t have a memorial tournament for Mike Gaden. And congratulations to winners St Georges.
“I would also like to thank the rugby club for allowing us to use their facilities and all those people who helped out over the weekend, in particular the BBQ team of Sarah, Paul and Sue.
“I thought that the referees did a fantastic job, particularly in yesterday’s heat, and we hope to see them again next year.
“Our commercial partners – Beerhouse, Riverview Gym, The Beaver Pub and the Insurance Partnership – also deserve a mention as their support is vital in ensuring the continued success of Beverley Town Football Club.
“Finally I hope that all the teams enjoyed themselves yesterday and will be back again next year.
“But if people are looking to enter teams next year they need to register in the week before the event – you cannot just turn up on the day.”
