Young Braves Battle Hard Against Sutton

The Beverley Braves under nines continued their formidable form of late with a win over Sutton Trust Lambwath at Longcroft.

An all round team effort saw the Braves rattle up ten tries and keep a clean sheet, a great achievement against a Lambwath side who did not lack enthusiasm and were prepared to offload the ball at any opportunity.

Beverley opened the scoring in their first set of six when Ethan Rowbotham’s strong run set up the position for Oliver Loney to power over for the first of his hat-trick. It was soon 2 nil when after a good run from Tom Colley set up the position for Marcus Walker to race over.

Tom Sparkes had his best game so far in his short career and he used all his size to take the ball up field, break the tackle and barge over for his first try for the club, an effort that went a long way to him winning the man of the match award.

The run around move between Ryan Deane and Lewis Egan has confused many defences this season and this created the space for Egan to go over and make it 4nil.

After a great run from Deane saw him pulled down just yards short it was Loney on hand to make it 5nil. It was then up to William Snook to score the next with an elusive run after a long pass from Walker. 6nil at half time and to keep any team scoreless is a great feat and Joseph Denis and Tom Newton contributed to the water tight defence.

In the second half William Kirkup, on his debut, looked dangerous with the ball in his hands and it was good pressure from the whole team including Will Sanford that eventually ended with Rowbotham getting try number seven.

Strong yardage from Tom Marr set up the run around again, this time Deane supplying the pass for Dylan English to dance his way over the try line. It was then left to Walker to race away over from thirty yards and Loney to complete his hat-trick before the final whistle.

Beverley Braves under eights had a character building game to forget against Sutton Trust Lambwath on Tuesday night going down 9-0 despite showing plenty of heart with some boys giving away as much as 18 months in age against a team who will all be playing under nines next year.

In what was a tough game the Braves still had some outstanding performances with Shamus Blades showing some good go forward , some great work from acting half from Tom Nuttall and the now usual solid defensive stint from Jacob Parkinson.

The boys will have the chance to dust themselves down and get back on the horse very  quickly as the next game is against the same opposition who will obviously be full of confidence, a real test of character for the young  braves.

Coach Craig Collins said” We just didn’t get in the arm wrestle”.
