Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, has welcomed new measures to provide more car parking spaces in town centres, reversing the anti-car red tape imposed by the previous Labour Government.
This week the Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles MP, announced that the centrally-imposed limits on town centre parking spaces will be removed, helping to provide a big boost to struggling high streets and small shops.
Graham said: “I am delighted to see the return of fairer parking. It is great news for shoppers, businesses and the East Riding as a whole.”
He added: “The Government’s decision to end Labour’s war on the motorist is a no-brainer. This will be especially beneficial for the rural areas of my constituency, where public transport facilities are limited.
“I hope that more parking spaces will help small shops prosper on local high streets, assist many families while out shopping and eliminate the stress of fighting for a parking spot.
“I am pleased this Government is adopting a common sense approach when tackling the issues facing local communities.”
National parking restrictions set by Whitehall have until now dictated the number of parking spaces a council is permitted to grant, often with a cap that limits the spaces town centres can offer even when they want to offer more.

Surely the no-brainer here is Graham Stuart MP!
How can he blame the Labour Government for parking charges when they have been imposed across East Yorkshire by the CONSERVATIVE run council!?!?! East Riding of Yorkshire Council has had the power to create fairer parking across the county for years, but have never done so. Yes, the Labour Party did put a few restrictions in, but ERYC still charged more and put unwanted restrictions in places that clearly needed more flexibility.
Shouldn’t Mr Stuart have been working more effectively with his fellow Tories who run County Hall to get parking charges made more equitable over the past 6 years, rather than jumping onto a band wagon at this late stage?
All fine words supporting the motorist, coming from a man banned from driving for six months back in 2005 for speeding!
Yeah, but no but
I used that picture as I am really confused by the parking tarrif, 50p first hour 80p per hour for two hours etc –
HU17 Admin – I agree about the confusion. Usually, the longer you park, the more cost effective it is to encourage you stay longer in an area (i.e. use local shops and businesses for longer). If it was 80p for 1 hour or £1 for 2 hours, perhaps more people would stay for the 2 hours in town??? Confusing indeed!
But then again, car parking chargers have always been a cash cow for ERYC.
