Parliament Unites To Challenge Outbreak Of Lawlessness

Graham Stuart returned to London Thursday to join with his fellow MPs in denouncing the violence of this week’s riots, ensure more effective maintenance of law and order in future and examine the underlying causes for so many engaging in such outrages.

Parliament was recalled from its summer recess for the first time since 2002 to have an emergency debate on the violence in London and cities throughout England.

The Beverley and Holderness MP said: “I was in Parliament to express the shock, disappointment and anger of my constituents.   These mobs have ruined innocent lives, damaged businesses and undermined the self confidence of communities filled with mostly hard working, decent people.”

“These riots were not political protests.  They were not a way of expressing concerns about the Coalition Government.  These were acts of greed and vandalism carried out by groups who thought they could get away with it. We need to make sure they don’t.”

“There have been many acts of individual bravery by police officers and other public servants and members of the public. Officers from Humberside Police have helped in  both London and Manchester and I want to pay tribute to them.  The true spirit of Britain can be seen in the dedication and bravery that has been exhibited by our law enforcement community over the last week.”

Graham also expressed disappointment that some Labour MPs and others had tried to score political points from the violence. He said: “No one smashed up JJB Sports because youth services may be reduced. We need to present a united front, challenge the values and selfishness of the rioters and speak as one in saying that economic challenges don’t justify public disorder and theft. ”
