Toll Gavel United Church preschool visited “Fresh n Fruity” on Dyer Lane as part of their preparation for harvest.
4 of the older children who attend the preschool along with some of the staff spent time learning about different fruit and vegetables and sampling kiwi.
The shop manager Tracey Hartley also very generously donated to the preschool and the Church two large boxes of locally grown produce which will eventually be taken to The Crossings in Hull, a newly opened centre that works alongside the homeless in Hull and the east Riding of Yorkshire.
Sheila, the manager at the preschool, said she was delighted with the local support from Fresh n Fruity and that it was an important learning experience for the children who took part.
“It is good for us to work in conjunction with local business. The children enjoyed naming the fruit and vegetables in the shop and learning about less familiar ones.”
The Church at it’s Harvest Festival will be exploring Transition Towns and how the sharing of local produce is a great way of sharing resources so there is less waste. Ruth, the minister at Toll Gavel who went with the children on the trip and led a short harvest celebration said of the event.
“It is great to share with others and to see the delight on the children’s faces as they explore and learn about God’s world.”
“In this economically tight environment in which we live, as we celebrate and give thanks for the generous provision of God’s harvest let us give thanks for all the ways in which we can share the benefits locally.”
Fresh n Fruity when sourcing produce for the shop often works by sharing different produce with other local enthusiasts.
