With just over two months to Christmas, preparations are well under way to light up Beverley and make it sparkle more than ever over the festive season.
Despite difficult economic times, over eighty businesses and residents continue to support the drive to fill the town with small trees. Thanks to everyone who has ordered a tree – these will be going up, with the invaluable help of the Beverley Rugby League Club, on Sunday November 20th.
The Christmas Lights Committee has invested in a number of new items this year – look out for trees and snowflakes across Toll Gavel and a new tree in Angel Square. This is only possible thanks to investment from the Town Council and the efforts of everyone who fundraises on behalf of Beverley Christmas Lights.
The fundraising goes on all year and the next event is on October 29th. It is a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ concert being held at Toll Gavel church in Beverley, starting at 7:30pm.
It features the Beverley Male Voice Choir singing pieces which range from a number from the musical ‘Cats’ to a chorus from the opera ‘Nabucco’ and, of course, finishing with everyone joining in with prom favourites such as Land of Hope and Glory.
Tickets are available from the Tourist Information Office in Beverley at just £5 each – why not go along to what promises to be a great evening?
Looking further ahead, this year sees some changes to the lighting up ceremony. The lights on the Market Cross will be switched on by the Mayor of Beverley and the Chairman of the Lions Club on Saturday November 26th. There will be a service taken by Reverend Becky Lumley and carols sung by St Mary’s Primary School Choir and it all starts at 3pm.
Then on Wednesday 30th November the lights on the large trees in town will be switched on as part of an event which starts at 6:00pm. The event starts in Wednesday Market and will feature scenes of the nativity story being acted out at different points through the town.
The finale will be in Saturday Market featuring a gospel choir, Viking Radio, a hog roast and much more. Many of the shops will be open for late night shopping so it promises to be a lively night.
The evening celebrations also include the lighting up of the North Bar, so come along and join in – remember that car parking in town is free after 6pm.
