From the lows of the previous match, it was up to Beverley to show all their courage against a formidable East Hull side. It was apparent from the side line in the first few minutes though that there would not be a repeat of last week. A fantastic run broke the tackles by tough second row Dylan Clifford putting pressure on the Hull forwards and it was not long before they started passing the ball along the line and found Harry Bell who was so unlucky not to score after some excellent scoots.
This was just the start that Beverley needed and from then on their confidence grew. After the hand over the Braves were now called upon to defend against this big side. Jamie Branton at prop forward had a massive game today along side Callum Officer who is also outstanding week on week. The pair were breaking tackles and gaining yards up the field which was vital and from this, playmaker James McGahey made a perfect pass towards a call by Joe Wardill who slid across the line to open the scoring for Beverley with an excellent try.
Ferocious play followed from both sides and from all players and the game was a joy to watch. Conor Egan grows each week and is getting so much more involved in the game with some intelligent play and Kurt Pelham continues to do text book tackles which bring down the largest and fastest players with ease. The ball went down the line again to find Clifford; the defender though went to take the next player along leaving a gap for Clifford to power over with another superb try. Brilliant play.
East Hull are a strong side though and from the play of the ball some players had to put their body on the line to stop the onslaught, not least Owen Harrison who wrapped up the big players with experience beyond his years. East Hull pressured Beverley’s line but the line held tight. Again and again they were tested and finally Hull broke through to score their first try of the match and the whistle blew with a half time score of 6 – 12.
The game restarted where it left off with East Hull attacking Beverley’s line but the ball went loose and a very brave Tom Woods dived onto the ball to give possession back to the Braves. As they worked their way up the field Keegan Bartlett kicked a fantastic high ball to shift the pressure back onto Hull. James Sherwin took the ball in so bravely and at speed working well with centre Harry Gray who himself had another strong game.
Clifford received the ball and head down he charged forward and was impossible to stop scoring a brilliant try and before East Hull had time to sort themselves, another attacking move saw McGahey change direction to release Wardill who was charging at speed and he used all his strength to cross over edging the score away from East Hull.
Danny Dawson came onto the field fired up and broke tackles with some excellent runs and a team try to be proud of saw Wardill cross the line yet again. The game was excellent to watch, Jay Black had found his form again with lovely passes and Harvey Lazenby also made his presence known. Hull did manage to score two consolation tries with some good work to finish the match at 16 – 26 but it was Beverley’s day today as they stood up to this massive opposition with every man giving everything.
Man of the match was Dylan Clifford who had a brilliant game in attack and defence.
