This was a desperately disappointing afternoon for the blue and golds at the Beverley Leisure Centre.
A second half capitulation saw them concede 22 points without reply despite leading 12-8 at the break and the Haworth Park outfit having a man dismissed in the 39th minute.
The game started poorly for the hosts with Beverley fumbling the kick off and the visitors scored in the corner off the resultant set of six.
Beverley’s reply was however swift. Some smart work on the blind side saw Ian Lane and Gavin Platt combine to send Lee Atkinson diving over in the corner for a well taken try. Beverley continued to press and enjoyed several repeat sets inside the Haworth 20 metre zone but they too often were trying to just charge over when much more invention was needed.
Having withstood the pressure the visitors restored their lead in the 25th minute with another unconverted try as the blustery conditions made goal kicking very difficult.
Beverley did manage to get up the right end of the field aided by a string of penalties awarded as the visitors continued to tackle high. Gavin Proctor was on hand to take advantage and score one of his typical tries from close range besides the posts. Ryan Watkin added the conversion and also penalty goal as the visitors had a man sent off for yet more foul play on the stroke of half time.
The second half saw the visitors look by far the better side. There was no shortage of possession and territory for Beverley but found an enthusiastic visitor’s defence virtually impossible to breach.
Lee Stevens took Beverley’s man of the match award as his nonstop charges posed the most problems for the visitors. Lee Atkinson was also in the votes as he produced possibly his best performance of the season.
At the time of going to print Beverley are without a game this weekend.
