Thousands of residents have signed up to receive a text which reminds them to put out their brown bins.
Within days of East Riding of Yorkshire Council launching its new text reminder service for the brown bins, nearly 7,000 residents had signed up and that number is rising.
Residents who sign up receive a free text message the night before their brown bin is due to be emptied.
This service can also inform residents of changes to collections in the event of severe bad weather, along with information on what can be recycled in the brown bin.
A year ago the council launched a similar free text reminder service for the blue recycling bins. Since then 21,000 residents have signed up.
Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said: “What a result! This is an excellent response because it means those bins are almost certain to be emptied.
“This is even more important since we rolled out the two new collection services last year of food waste and cardboard in the brown bins, and glass, further plastics and Tetra Pak in the blue bins.”
Residents can sign up to the brown bin text message service by texting the code at the top left of their brown bin calendar to 07786 200406.
