Bishop Burton based photographer John Denton has returned from the International Convention of the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers in London carrying off one of the top awards.
At the Awards Dinner on Sunday 15th January he was awarded the highest accolade available, a Master of Photography.
John explained,
“These awards are the ultimate annual event, like the Oscars for photographers. There are awards within individual categories but the main aim is to be recognised by your peers. There are three preliminary levels of Licentiate, Associate and Fellow. These are judged purely on photographic merit and after that it is the opinion of your peers that decides whether you progress from Fellow to Master. It’s a great, great honour.”
The award is based on John’s work as a Fashion, Bridal and Art Nude photographer as well as his commitment to training other photographers. It was the end of a busy week with John delivering seven workshops and lectures over the course of five days. His photography has taken him around Europe and this year promises to be his farthest flung yet.
“We’ve been to some amazing places, the highlight of last year was Istanbul where we shot Bridal and Fashion Portraits in the Sultans Palace, Blue Mosque and around the streets. It was a fantastic location and the people welcomed us with open arms.”
“This year we are going as far afield as Thailand, backed by a range of international sponsors which is wonderful. Equally good is that we train photographers from all around the world and they come to us here in East Yorkshire.
“It’s fantastic that we can develop our own business but also that of partners who host our clients, feed them and provide locations to shoot in. The WOW factor of coming along to our Calf House Studio in Bishop Burton can’t be underestimated, we love living and working here.”
John works with his wife Liz in the training business. He describes her as the true brains of the business teaching marketing, branding and structure to photographers. John’s love though is for taking pictures, particularly of Brides.
“Whilst much of my work is with training and fashion I still love shooting weddings and take on up to twelve weddings a year. After that my main passion is for nude and fashion photography. Once someone understands how light and pose can change a body shape they can achieve great things with their imagery.”
“We’ve been successful in launching a number of local models into the highest echelons of modelling and that’s something else I feel particularly proud of. This year has been fantastic so far with the launch of my first book and a range of ebooks through Amazon and just keeps getting better.”
