Local author Barrie Barnes approached David Elvidge last year with the news that through his research into Beverley’s history around WW1, he had discovered thirty three names missing from the memorial in Hengate Gardens.
Barrie had researched from 1914 to 1924 and uncovered information about some disquiet in the Town, the people of the Town in the main wanted a memorial in Wednesday Market, the Town Council or Corporation as it was then opted for Hengate Gardens.
It was also said that the people wanted a small memorial not the grand one we have now but the Mayor insisted even drawing up plans for the statues to be cast in bronze, they were however eventually as now know carved from stone due to spiralling costs.
During this time for various reasons names were added and removed from the list of those to be remembered and although 411 were recorded the following 33 names were omitted;
Bell George
Bentley Charles
Bolton John Fennel
Brown W
Brown George E
Cattle Ernest
Caddy Albert Henry

Please can the people of Beverley contact David Elvidge at the address below if they believe these names should be added to a memorial in the garden, possibly a new one similar to those on the back wall already.
