One World – Our Home: Children Get A Visit From Rainforest Explorer

Walkington Primary School was thrilled to host a visit from Phil Williams, of Plan-It Eco.

Phil is a renowned expert on rainforests; particularly in the Amazon and South East Asia, where he has worked for many years. He retains strong links with the Amazon and leads visits for teachers from this region every year to experience the work of the Yachana Lodge foundation.

The Key Stage 2 topic for this term is ‘The Rainforest’, so Phil was the obvious choice to come and speak to the children. He enthralled the children with his images of the rainforest and talked to them about the importance of the preservation of the rainforest and its impact on all of our lives.

The pupils all enjoyed taking part in the workshops, led by Phil. He shared his experiences of living in a village with the indigenous people of the Amazonian rainforest and of their culture and customs, as well as showing the children a wide range of original artefacts.

Luca in Year 4 enjoyed learning about, “the boy who carved an instrument from a scrap of wood with a machete,” while Eleanor’s favourite moment was, “when Phil made a blowpipe and fired it across the room!”

Throughout the day, parents and governors ‘dropped in’ to school and were equally enthralled with Phil’s knowledge and commitment to protecting this part of the world.

By the end of the day pupils and adults alike had an increased respect for the Indians who live in the rainforest, their lives, and their culture.
