Stay Safe On The Roads During The Cold Snap

With the cold snap hitting East Yorkshire this week, motorists are urged to take extra care.

Beverley Motor Works have put together some hints and tips to help you keep safe on the roads:

  • Always drive within your own and your vehicles capabilities.
  • Watch other road users to see how they react to the conditions ahead and react to what you see.
  • Stopping distances can increase, stay focused, look further ahead for hazards and make sure you are far enough behind the vehicle in front.
  • In slippery conditions consider setting off in second gear and drive in the highest gear possible.
  • Always aim to stay on gritted roads
  • Clutch, acceleration, steering and braking should be smooth and progressive. Brake early!
  • Watch out for bridges – they freeze first and thaw last.
  • Black ice is almost invisible, and it reduces grip to zero.
  • Front wheel skid – take your foot off the accelerator, consider pushing the clutch in and steer smoothly. When the tyres grip again steer your vehicle back on course.
  • Rear wheel skid – the back of your vehicle will swing out sideways and may cause a spin if you don’t correct it quickly enough. Lift off the accelerator, consider pushing the clutch in and steer in the direction of the skid so that the front wheels continue to point in the direction you want to travel.
