This Saturday, local MP for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart, will be visiting Walkington Playing Field and Middleton Tennis Club, to congratulate them on securing Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.
The Inspired Facilities fund is part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country. Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games.
The investments will breathe new life into tired facilities that can be unattractive to sports participants or difficult to maintain and run. Grants have also been offered to convert existing buildings into venues that are suitable for grassroots sport and to allow local clubs to buy the facilities they use.
Walkington Playing Field has been awarded £49,825 of National Lottery investment to refurbish existing changing rooms and Middleton Tennis Club £50,000 to resurface a tennis court and replace perimeter fencing.
Graham said:
“I’ve been determined to see East Yorkshire get the most out of the 2012 Olympics. It was great that we persuaded the authorities to bring the Olympic torch to Beverley.”
“Now we have further cause for celebration since Sport England announced it is endowing Middleton and Walkington to improve sports facilities that will provide a lasting Olympic legacy to those communities.”
“I hope that this investment will act as a catalyst and we start seeing more and more people involved in, and playing sport.”
These projects are just two of the 350 local community sports groups who have been offered a total of £17.4 Million in Olympic legacy funding through the Inspired Facilities Fund.
