New Scheme Will Help Promote Vibrant Night-Time Economy

The awards scheme to find East Riding of Yorkshire’s best run pubs, restaurants and licensed bars gets underway next week.

The Best Bar None Award Scheme for 2012 is to be officially launched at County Hall, Beverley, at 6pm on Monday, 12 March. Additional information sessions will be held on Thursday, 22 March, at 7pm, at Goole Leisure Centre and Wednesday, 28 March, at 7pm, at The Spa Bridlington.

The national awards scheme provides a benchmark for responsible management practices in licensed premises and aims to reward well-run and safe venues.

It’s an opportunity for East Riding of Yorkshire Licensing Authority, Humberside Police and other partners to work together with the licensed trade to promote responsible licensed premises.

The scheme also helps promote the East Riding as an area with a vision for a vibrant night-time economy.

Well-run businesses are recognised and rewarded for the standard they set in the running of their premises, with special credit to all those who help tackle the problems associated with alcohol misuse.

This is a new and expanded BBN scheme following a successful pilot in 2009 and has been designed to recognise the uniqueness of the East Riding and encourage more businesses to become accredited under Best Bar None and to continue to raise standards across the trade. All of the accredited bars/pubs/restaurants will be allowed to display their accreditation along with the Best Bar None logo.

Licensed premises across the East Riding are being encouraged to enter one of five categories:
Best Pub (town)
Best Bar (town)
Best Community Pub (rural)
Best Food Lead (must have an alcohol license in place and be open evenings) Best Family Friendly (Pub/Bar)

Councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for public protection at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We know that many of our licensees across the East Riding make fantastic efforts to ensure their venues are run responsibly and it’s only right that they should be recognised for their contribution to making the area a safer and more attractive place for people to enjoy an evening out.

“The continued support of the trade to work in partnership with the licensing authority and police will ensure we can jointly provide an even safer and enjoyable experience for everyone visiting the East Riding of Yorkshire at night.

“Best Bar None plays a key role in getting the licensing trade and authorities working in partnership and seeing ‘both sides of the coin’, the awards are a great opportunity to work towards a common purpose, raising the profile of local business and our area’s night-time economy.”

Paul Davison, chief superintendent at Humberside Police, said: “At a time when our licensees are feeling the strain of the current economic climate, we welcome the fact that they are asking to participate in the awards scheme and already have received initial interest from the trade.

“Putting customer safety and security at the forefront of their operations will be a crucial part of the assessment process. But of equal importance this time will be looking at how the problems that alcohol abuse poses to people’s health and the harm it causes to individuals and communities through alcohol related crime is being addressed by the license holders.”

Application forms to participate in BBN can be obtained from the licensing team on (01482) 396297 or licensing@eastriding.gov.uk or by attending in person at one of the launch nights. Places are limited so telephone or email to confirm your place.

Invitations to licensees have already gone out and information packs and application forms will be available at the launch and on the council’s website www.eastriding.gov.uk campaigns and adverts will be carried out to promote the scheme.
