Beverley Children’s Centre along with East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s member management development team and youth support service has been running a course to boost the self-esteem and confidence of young mothers.
The six-week pilot scheme called Looking Good Feeling Good has given young mums in Beverley the chance to learn new skills and become more confident.
During the course, gym instructors from Beverley Leisure Complex showed the mums the best way to tone up and get fit after having a baby while East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s adult education team were on hand to explain how to keep safe while using the internet.
There were also sessions on assertiveness and self-defence and the course will culminate on Monday 26 March with the mums being given a Gok Wan-inspired makeover by national high street fashion retailer New Look to boost their new-found confidence even further.
Councillor Julie Abraham, portfolio holder for children, young people and schools at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “it is often very difficult for young mums to see life beyond their new family member and it is excellent that this course can enable them to do just that.
“Each young mum is an individual that has much to offer and by building their self esteem, they will be much better equipped to provide for their child and help with its development.”
Leone Deverson, children’s centre leader for Beverley Choices, said: “All the activities aimed to give the young mums the opportunity to explore different aspects of their lives, both as young people and young parents in a fun and interactive way.”
Marina Rigley, training and development officer at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, who helped deliver the course said: “This is a perfect example of social responsibility and a community partnership working at its best.”
