United Clinch Title With Win Over Whitestar

The East Riding Girls Football League match took place at a windswept Beverley Leisure Centre and both teams took a few minutes to get settled.

Mill Lane United were the first team to adapt to the conditions and they soon began pressing the home team and they may well have taken an early lead had their efforts not been blocked by Beverley Whitestar’s in form goalkeeper Charlotte McIvor.

This signalled a real push from the visitors and it was only some outstanding defending by Chantelle Bowden, Harriet Branfield, Katie Preston and Lindsey Jordan that kept the advancing Mill Lane at bay, with both Charlotte McIvor and Lindsay Jordan putting in commanding performances. The game then turned into more of a midfield battle with Izzie Clark having a particularly effective game as she kept Mill Lane United’s Emma Smith quiet throughout.

Millie Michaels, Anna Green, Hannah Collinson, Ruby Judson, Olivia Gilbey and Megan Rodgers were tireless in midfield for Beverley Whitestar and Immy Wright would show her pace and determination as she attacked every ball played forward. It was Mill Lane’s forwards who broke the deadlock however, and just before half time they scored two goals in quick succession to finish the half with a convincing lead.

As soon as the second half started it was obvious that Beverley Whitestar felt that they were more than a match for the table topping visitors and they began playing fluid, controlled football with Lindsay Jordan once again having a major influence on the game.

Immy Wright was denied on a few occasions when the Mill Lane defence combined to block her runs at the keeper and at the other end Chantelle Bowden put in her best performance of the season as she intercepted several attempts by the on rushing Mill Lane Forwards.

With the end of the match fast approaching a well worked set piece gave Mill Lane the third and final goal of the game but this did not deter the Whitestar players who competed for everything until the final whistle. While the points went to the visitors the home team were able to reflect on a tremendous performance which can only stand them in good stead for this year’s remaining fixtures and on to next season.

Many thanks to Simon Leaning for refereeing today’s game.

Beverley Whitestar player of the match awarded to the whole team for an outstanding performance throughout.
