Longcroft Sports Stars Of The Future

Two students from Longcroft School and Performing Arts College are carving themselves sporting careers in football and cricket.

Brandon Fleming has been playing football for as long as he can remember and has been a main stay of the Hull City Under 12s for over two years. He explained: “I really love to play football and it’s great to be part of Hull City, even if it’s only in a junior team. I’ve worked really hard at it and my family are proud of what I’ve achieved.”

After his recent end of year assessment, Bradley was thrilled to be invited to join the 13s team, meaning his time with Hull City will continue. Never one to let his footballing success go to his head, Brandon is modest about passing his assessment, but said:

“I’m really chuffed! It’s almost like I’ve had a mini-career and I hope it will continue for a long time to come.”

Elsewhere, Gregory Whyley is hitting them for six on the cricket pitch. Inspired by his dad’s time playing for Driffield and England’s success in the 2005 Ashes, he soon proved himself to be an able all-rounder and is now a member of the East Yorkshire Under 15s and also plays for Longcroft.

Gregory said:

“I’ve been with the Elite East Yorkshire team for two seasons and, to date, that’s my biggest achievement. There’s a real sense of team work, but there’s also a lot of commitment, with two matches during week, another two at the weekend, plus practice sessions – but I always get my homework done before I play!”

With heroes like Freddie Flintoff and Sachin Tendulkar, when asked if he has any advice for other students who want to make it in cricket, Gregory’s reply is “never give up.”
