Depleted Braves Battle Hard Against Hull

In driving wind and rain Beverley Braves under 10s, severely depleted by holidays and illness, put in a huge effort but fell just short against West Hull.

Such was the commitment of the lads, there was no individual man of the match award, the whole team being recognised for their effort. This was underlined in a number of different ways, like Ollie Gresswell’s first full match and Dylan English, solid once again at full back taking the kickoff safely despite the conditions.

The two teams were matched well from the start but despite a number of breaks, there was no score for 15 minutes. Luke Dobbie looked sharp on the right wing and caused Wests no end of problems whilst Oliver Loney worked tirelessly in defense and drove the ball up well gaining valuable yards against the well drilled West Hull defense.

Wests scored first when, after good defence on the right wing from Ryan Deane and Dobbie, they finally squeezed over for an unconverted try. The Braves picked up the effort and after a well-timed interception by William Kirkup, Marcus Walker drove the ball close to the West Hull line allowing Ethan Rowbotham to dive over from acting half back. With,

Walker’s conversion the Braves had a 4-6 half-time lead.

West Hull were first to score in the second half making it 10-6, but the Braves were not in the mood for giving up; Lewis Egan continued to probe with his darting runs and his usual tackling stint bringing down opposition players twice his size. After a number of errors from the tiring Beverley team, West Hull took advantage to score two more tries, but it was the Braves who had the last word, George Lees storming down the right side to score and make the final score line a little more reflective of the effort Beverley put in at 22-10.
