Yorkshire Wolds Charity Cycle Ride

On Saturday June 23rd 2012, John Ahern, with the support of 3 friends will be cycling around the Yorkshire Wolds following the 146 mile Yorkshire Wolds cycle route.

John is completing the ride to raise funds and awareness for 12 year old Ben Hodgson, who suffers from a muscle wasting disease called Duchene Muscular Dystrophy.

John, who works at the Defence School of Transport with Ben’s dad, Karl, will start the circular route in Beverley at 0400 hrs and head through Walkington to South Newbald then back over the A1079 to Goodmanham.

The cyclists will then continue on the route to Market Weighton, through Londesborough, Burnby and to Pocklington. Then following the one way system around the town they will head out towards the village of Millington and continue on route towards Huggate. They will then take a left turn and cross the A166 at South Wold and continue on a nice relaxing ride down hill into the little village of Thixendale.

However, what goes down must go up!! After a long climb out of Thixendale the team will then turn right towards Burythorpe then left towards Westow. After that the team head for the most westerly part of the ride, towards the little village of Kirkham, they will then follow the route for another 6 miles into Norton on Derwent, at which point they will have completed the first 58 miles. Just in time for breakfast!

From Norton on Derwent the team will start the hard climb up Settering Bank following the route towards Sledmere, they will then take a left turn and head for East Lutton, Weaverthorpe, Butterwick and into Foxholes. From Foxholes they will carry onto Staxton Wold and then turn right for Hunmanby then Reighton, Grindale and then into Bempton. 101 miles will have been completed at which point I’m sure another break will be in order.

Leaving Bempton and reaching Sewerby, the final leg of 40 miles is ahead of the team. They will then travel inland towards Kilham and Burton Agnes, crossing the A164 at Burton Agnes following the route which runs parallel to the A164 through Harpam, Lowthorpe, Nafferton into Driffield.

From Driffield they will follow the route to Skerne through Hutton Cranswick and at the top of the village they will cross the A164 and follow the route again running parallel to the A164 towards South Dalton. From here the team will complete the final 6 miles through Etton, Cherry Burton and finally returning to Beverley.

The team hope to complete the 146 miles ride by 2100 hrs.
