A Time To Remember At Beverley Races

Beverley Racecourse enjoyed the best weather during the season so far as the sun shone on their midweek fixture.

Before any racing, the course paid tribute to Scottish Jockey Campbell Gillies, 22, who tragically died on holiday in Greece in Swimming accident on Tuesday by holding a minute’s silence. Jockeys also wore black armbands during the race in memory of Mr. Giles.

For one man, Sam Preen the day gave him a chance to pay a fitting tribute to his late father. Les Preen who died aged 45 back in 2005 was a regular at the Westwood Racecourse attending Beverley for many years.

His son, Sam sponosred the first race, The In Loving Memory Of Les Preen Maiden Auction Stakes.

Sam told HU17.net;

“My dad was a racegoer at Beverley for nearly 30 years up until he died, he took me there growing up and got me into racing.”

“He loved to have a bet up until he was too ill so it was fitting to name a race in his honour at his favourite course.”

The In Loving Memory Of Les Preen Maiden Auction Stakes was won by Athurs Secret ridden by Michael O’Connell.
