Although the Beverley Braves had their biggest win of the season against Lambwath Lions, credit must go to their opponents who never gave up.
Lambwath were disrupted by a shortage of players who meant several Braves guested for them, but it is always difficult to knit a team together with players who they have just met.
To that end, a special mention must go to William Sanford, Matthew Hutchinson, and William Kirkup in the first half and Tom Newton, Oliver Gresswell and William Wallis in the second who played all, or at least part, of the half for the Lions. Each lad gave a great amount of effort, whether playing for the Braves or Lambwath in the muggy heat.
The scoring started early when Tom Marr, playing hooker, squeezed over from acting half back then converted his own try to go 6 nil up. Next it was Wallis, who charged down the left hand touchline to score, his conversion making it 12 nil. Wallis was soon on the score sheet again taking Marr’s cross field kick to bustle his way over in his usual style.
The Beverley forwards were now getting themselves on top with Henry Hughes and Oliver Gresswell punching holes in the Lions defence and both scoring identical tries after racing diagonally to the left-hand corner, Hughes converting his own try. Ethan Rowbotham seemed to tackle everything that moved, stifling any Lambwath attack, but with the ball in hand, he was also dangerous finishing off a great passing move to crash over the line and kick the goal as well. At half-time the Braves led 32nil.
Half backs Lewis Egan and Marcus Walker controlled the Beverley attack well causing numerous problems with their running and passing. Walker was next on the score sheet with a jinking run through the centre to score under the posts, a try converted by himself. Just a few moments later and Walker raced over in the corner, Ryan Deane coolly converting. Luke Dobbie nearly scored but was unable to pick up the ball after an unfortunate bounce from a Dylan English kick.
Thomas Cohen had a couple of good runs on the opposite wing whilst Joseph Dennis returned to action with some big tackles after some time out with a broken toe. English raced away to score his first try of the season, and it was left to man of the match, Marr to finish the scoring, getting his second try again from acting half-back.
Final Score: Lambwath Lions 0 Beverley Braves 54
