Beverley Treasure House : Traces Exhibition

Described as a personal exploration of English prehistory in today’s landscape, ‘Traces’, an exhibition of photographs by Steve Speller and ceramics by Alison Milner, is currently on display in Gallery Two at the Beverley Treasure House.

Steve has been a professional photographer since 1985 and the images in this exhibition reflect his life long fascination with the area’s pre-historic landscape. Hill forts, long barrows and stone circles are reminders of our ancestors and their connection to the landscape, although much of their true function has long since been forgotten.

Photographed while en-route to other destinations in all weathers and with little time to set up, these images capture fleeting moments of history and reflect the timeless beauty of these sites.

Alison Milner originally trained in furniture design at the Royal College of Art. She is an independent designer with over twenty years of experience across many disciplines, including illustration, products, furniture, exhibitions and books.

In collaboration with her husband, Steve, Alison aims to draw attention not only to special sites, but also to the overlooked wild flowers and weeds that inhabit the landscape. These plants also have important functions they were used in cooking, creating dyes or prepared as medicine, but now, much like the long barrows and stone circles, their traditional uses are largely forgotten.

Traces runs until Saturday, 29 September. For further information, call (01482) 392780.

Gallery opening times are:
Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9.30am-5pm
Tuesday and Thursday 9.30am–8pm
