A late Eddie Birch strike earned Beverley Town FC a point as they hosted Humber Premier League Champions Ricketts AFC.
A crowd of close to 100 people were at the Norwood Recreation Ground to witness was turned out to be a fiery encounter between two of the best sides in the league.
It was the visitors who pilled on the early pressure, though they were unable to get past an inform Adam Nicholson that made a couple of fines saves to keep the score level. A few hard tackles went in however match officials showed little sympathy towards Town as their players appeared to be fouled.
Ricketts came into this match off the back of a seven nil win, but it was Town, who took the lead after Luke Thompson scored a screamer smashing the ball the into the top corner from a tightest of angles.
The score remained 1 – 0 to Beverley at the break though Reckitts AFC turned the game on its head with goals from Ben Kinsley and John Leonnard.
With time running out Eddie Birch popped up to score the all-important equaliser earning Beverley Town a well-deserved point.
Speaking after the game manager Dave Ricardo told HU17.net;
“I am totally impressed with the lads’ attitude throughout the game; we thoroughly deserved the point possibly more.”
“Of course I am disappointed with the individual error that led to their first goal and with the lack of concentration for the second, but this will improve with games.”
“I was extremely happy for Luke Thompson to score one of the best goals I have ever seen at any level; the kid is a class act, and that showed tonight.”
Ricardo was also quick to praise the crowd; the attendance at Norwood is by far their biggest in a long time, and he feels that the support gave his players an extra boost on the pitch, he said;
“It was a massive plus to have so many supporters watching; I can assure them it helps the team no end. It would be great to see as many down next Tuesday for the game against Scullcoats who came runners up last year.”
