On Friday 31st September six friends from Beverley set off from Morcambe on a 170 mile Coast to Coast challenge in order to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT). The idea for the challenge arose from a conversation between Chris Branfield (42) and David Calvert (46) last year.
David’s son, Scott (16) had been diagnosed with Leukaemia in June 2011 and Chris thought that the challenge would give David something to focus on during the following months.
After mentioning the idea to other friends the team was joined by Dean Gilbley (55), Mark Preston (49), Steve Rodgers (43) and Barry Toynton (50) also all from Beverley. Dean, Chris and David all cycled the 170 mile route from Morcambe in Lancashire to Bridlington whereas Mark Preston, a keen local runner, decided to complete a half-marathon on each of the 3 days. Steve and Barry provided support and planned the route.
The course saw the team pass through some spectacular country and included some challenging hills near Settle in West Yorkshire. The event ended on Sunday 2nd October at Bridlington, followed by a Ceremonial finish at Beverley Leisure Centre where they were met by supporting family and friends.
The event was a great success and helped raise just under £2000 for the TCT.
The team are planning another fund raising event in the New Year but if you’d like to donate now you can do so at http://www.justgiving.com/coast-2-coast-challenge
