Mill Lane United faced a well organised North Ferriby Greens team in a closely contested match. It was Mill Lane that asserted their authority in the early exchanges building up pressure on their opponent’s defence. On eight minutes, Hope Barrett fired off a shot from the right of the goal which the keeper parried out, the ball was the cleared as far as the edge of the box only to find Mollie Bligh whose first-time shot found the back of the net to give Mill Lane a 1-0 lead.
Although Ferriby looked dangerous on the break, Lane’s midfield of Mollie Bligh, Evie Barrett, Faye Marris and Lily Andrew Price continued to dominate possession. Chloe Virles came on up front for Mill Lane to inject fresh legs but Lane couldn’t convert their pressure into further goals before half time.
Ferriby came out for the second half with a determined effort to turn the game around; with the excellent Alice Stewart running the midfield for Ferriby, Lane struggled to break out of their own half. For all the possession Ferriby enjoyed in the early stages of the second half, they found it difficult to create any clear-cut chances against some superb defending by Ella Parker and Annabel Laughton.
Against the run of play Mill Lane United won a corner relieving the pressure, the corner, taken by Evie Barrett, had power and swerve on the ball, as the Ferriby defenders tried to make a clearance, the ball swinging towards the goal took a slight deflection on its way into to net to give Mill Lane a two-goal cushion. Olivia McPherson came on for Mill Lane as they tried to close the game out, the play, however, became more open with chances coming at both ends.
It was Ferriby that grabbed the next goal as Evie Barnes Blondell was the quickest to react to a loose ball in Lane’s penalty area to give Ferriby hope with ten minutes left on the clock. The closing phase saw chances fall to Lane’s Hannah Winter whose goal bound shot was blocked and two more chances for Ferriby, which brought out excellent saves from Olivia Westcott.
The game finished with Mill Lane United taking all three East Riding Girls Football League points and player of the match going to Lily Andrew Price.
