Mill Lane United Yellows gained their third successive victory in the East Riding Girls Football League against a well organised Brayton Belles side.In the previous two games Mill Lane had blown the opposition away with some some superb passing football and Brayton could have been forgiven for thinking this was going to be a bridge to far.
The game started and it was soon clear Brayton had come to play as they passed the ball around nicely with left winger Emily Owen showing some nice touches.Mill Lane finally started to take control and opened the scoring when a nice through ball from influential midfielder Emma Johnson found striker Grace Fletcher who finished in style with a fine right foot shot.Credit to Brayton who came straight back and it needed some resolute defending from Amy Radford and Courtney McConville to keep them out ably assisted by goal keeper Leah Shalgosky.
Mill Lane United finished the half the better and doubled their lead when another perfectly weighted pass by Johnson found striker Charlotte Holliday in space,quickly getting the ball under control before rounding the Brayton keeper and firing into the empty goal to give Mill Lane a 2 0 lead.The second half started with a fine right foot shot by Johnson after a pass from Fletcher to give Mill Lane a 3 0 lead.Brayton roared back and were rewarded when impressive winger Emily Owen scored the first goal of the season against Mill Lane to give Brayton some hope at 3 1.At this stage Mill Lane put Tonya Storr on a man marking job on danger girl Owen and Storr totally dominated her opponent to such an effect that they took total control as they upped the tempo to put the game out of Braytons reach with 3 further goals.
The fourth goal a fine strike from midfielder Emma Smith after a fine run by Holliday.The next and second goal of the game from Grace Fletcher after fighting to win the ball on the edge of the area before finishing in style to make it 5 1 to the home team.
United saved the best for last with a contender at this early stage of the season for goal of the season from defender Courtney McConville who is more used to marshalling the tightest defence in the division ,picking up the ball just inside Braytons half before unleashing a tremendous right foot thunderbolt that flew into the roof of the net to complete a commanding performance and a 6 1 victory for Mill Lane against a hard working, skillfully team who can be proud of their efforts.
Man of the matches this week were Courtney McConville for a commanding performance at the heart of the Mill Lane defence capped by that wonder goal and Emma Johnson for another energetic hard working performance in midfield.Special mention also to defender Amy Radford for another whole hearted performance and Tonya Storr for a performance of guts and desire in midfield .
