The Beverley Braves under 10s finished their season with a disappointing defeat at Holderness Vikings. The game rearranged from earlier in the season played on Saturday 6th October in lovely sunny conditions ended in a 40-12 defeat.
It was, however, a close first half with the Vikings scoring first to go
6 nil before Luke Dobbie showed great vision by picking up from the play the ball on the third tackle and having the confidence to outpace the Holderness defence down the right wing. With Tom Marr’s conversion, it was level at 6all.
Hard work from the forwards, particularly man of the match Oliver Loney and Ethan Rowbotham ensured the Braves were still in the game but increasingly the Braves defence struggled to cope with the big, strong running Vikings forwards. Oliver Gresswell built on his fine stint in training last week and Tom Newton put in some great, last ditch tackles. Tom Sparkes worked hard and Ryan Deane made several good breaks, but it was all in vain as the Vikings scored two more converted tries before half-time.
At 18-6 the Braves were still in the game but needed to score first in the second half. Despite the introduction of Tom Colley and Harry Newton, it was not to be, and the Vikings piled on the pressure and built some great momentum resulting in four unanswered tries playing some great rugby in the process. Lewis Egan and Marcus Walker tried to get the team moving from the half-back with the latter putting in some testing kicks whilst Dylan English did not let anyone down at full back.
To the Braves credit they did not give up, this season’s top try scorer William Wallis tried to make the most of his limited chances; Will Sanford put in his usual tackling stint, and William Kirkup looked dangerous also despite limited opportunities.
The final say in the game went to the Braves when Rowbotham scooted from acting half back to score and cement his position as second top try scorer for the season with the conversion coming from second top point’s scorer Walker.
