An Afternoon Of History To Round Off Beverley Literature Festval

British history is the order of the day on Sunday afternoon at the 10th Beverley Literature Festival. At 2pm, Helen Rappaport introduces her new book investigating the Victorian’s obsession with mourning after the death of Victoria’s beloved husband, Prince Albert.

Then, at 3.30pm, Andrew Lambert will bring to life the naval battles of the 1800s in which the young upstart America took on its former coloniser Britain in a battle for naval supremacy. Published to coincide with the conflict’s bi-centenary, in his book ‘The Challenge’ he throws new light on this war which until now has been much mythologised but little understood.

Rebecca Jenkins, co-director of the festival, said: “These events are perfect for a Sunday afternoon, both authors will be giving illustrated talks so you can sit back and relax, then enjoy teas, coffees and cake in the Treasure House café afterwards.”

Also, fans of cult and sci-fi can hear from two Dr Who writers. Best known for writing the episode which brought back Dr Who’s most persistent enemy to our screens, 2005’s ‘Dalek’, Rob Shearman will be talking with Nev Fountain about the franchise, TV comedy and finding the absurd in everyday life at 12pm.

Tickets are priced at £5 for the events.

Combined history tickets, at £8 can, be purchased for entry into Helen Rappaport at 2pm and Andrew Lambert at 3.30pm.

All events take place at Beverley Art Gallery, Treasure House, in Champney Road.

Also on Sunday, the Children’s Festival takes over the Children’s Library for its second day. Lara Goodband, co-director, said: “Tickets are rapidly selling out for this well-established festival.

At 1pm Emma Dodd will be getting the glitter out to celebrate the launch of her new book ‘Cinderelephant’ for which you are encouraged to come dressed for the ball. Other events include writing your own graphic novel at 10am, Debi Gliori with ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf’ at 10.30am and a workshop with Rusticus Theatre at 1.45pm.”

Tickets for children’s events are £2, with puppet shows priced at £3.
