Schoolgirl Leia Cole was presented with a national rugby league volunteer award at the Grand Final at Old Trafford last week. Leia gives up a great deal of her spare time to help coach the Beverley Braves cubs and under eights and this was originally recognised by the Hull and District league, naming her Young Volunteer of the Year, a nomination that meant she was then considered for the national award.
Leia played for the Braves for several years until, due to regulations, she was no longer able to play in a mixed team. Despite not having a girls team to go to Leia has remained very much involved with the game and Beverley Braves in particular. She not only coaches but is also qualified as a referee.
Leia was also nominated for her work with the Braves earlier in the year for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Chairman’s Awards for Junior Volunteer of the year. She was short listed in the top three, commended for her achievement and attended the awards ceremony at The Spa in Bridlington in May.
