Thousands of people came to the Beverley Westwood to enjoy a giant bonfire and fireworks display organised by the Beverley Lions.
The fire was lit by the Mayor of Beverley Margaret Pinder, Laura Fox and Geoff Rawson. while volunteers and members of the lions looked after the crowds and donations from the people at the event.
Craig Fawcett Secretary for local football team, the Humber Colts was out with members of the club collecting for the Lions. This year the team were set a target of £2,000.
Craig said;
“There was a real feel good factor when we had finished, I am confident we have smashed the target set by the Beverley Lions.”
“For last two the Humber Colts have been heavily involved with fund raising for the Beverley Lions. The Beverley Lions have been very supportive to us in developing our club.”
“It is important to us as a club to put something back into the community that support us.”
Cllr David Elvidge who volunteered said;
“My wife Janet and I joined the Lions to assist in stewarding the Beverley Bonfire. Whilst Janet carried around a bucket in an effort to raise funds for next year, I was allotted an area to look after and offer help, assistance and where needed guidance to a very large crowd.”
“This involved giving directions and from this we learned of visitors from Hull, Bridlington, Wawne and Hornsea, who had travelled to share in the night’s entertainment, oh and even some from Beverley.”
“The local police were present last night in significant numbers to ensure crowd safety and public order. They did a great job and co-ordinate well with the Lions to ensure a safe and enjoyable time was had by all.”
“Working alongside local legends like Bill Rice was an experience worth the effort, and I would urge everyone to reflect on last night and if you can, plan now to join us next year, because without volunteers, there will be no future for this remarkable communal gathering.”
