Humberside Fire and Rescue Services Urges Drivers To Take Care

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is urging drivers to take care when driving in areas that may be affected by localised flooding.

Group Manager Simon Anfield from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said: “At this time of year there is a lot more traffic on the roads and, along with the usual risks, heavy rain and ground surface water run-off has brought flooding to some areas. We would ask motorists not to drive through flood water as it’s easy to get stuck, even in relatively shallow water.”

“The Service has been called to attend a number of incidents earlier in the year to rescue people who had attempted to drive through flood waters and become stranded.”

“The relentless nature of water can make these rescues extremely hazardous to staff so I would ask people to take care.”

Simon continued: “It may seem an inconvenience to find an alternative route when confronted by flood water, especially during the Christmas rush, but getting is not only an inconvenience, it can be both costly and dangerous.”

“Drivers need to be aware of what may have caused the flood, it could be something such as overflowing drains which may have lifted a manhole cover in the middle of the road.

“Due to the high ground water levels, we are experiencing surface water flooding at locations not previously affected. We are working extremely hard with our partner agencies to mitigate the effects of the floods and protect our communities. However, we anticipate that we will continue to experience surface water flooding problems throughout the festive period.”
