Members of the Beverley Building Society have chosen the Martin House children’s hospice as winners of the Charity of the Month Competition for December.
Opened in 1987 Martin House is Yorkshire’s hospice for children and young people based in Wetherby, West Yorkshire. Martin House offer respite care to families where there is a child suffering from a life-limiting condition. The care team provide medical, practical and emotional support not only to the affected child, but also to parents and siblings. As well as caring for children in the hospice, members of the care team also support families in their own homes.
The impact on a family in which there is a child with a life limiting illness is difficult to imagine and Martin House makes a commitment to support the children and families in as flexible a way as possible.
Over the years, by working collaboratively with many different families, the hospice has been able to develop, fine-tune and expand its wide-ranging service.
During the course of the past twenty-five years Martin House has provided care and support to over 2000 families and has every intention of continuing its work in years to come. Running costs are currently £4.9 million and services provided to the families are free of charge. With very little statutory funding available, Martin House is largely funded by voluntary donations.
Edna Cawkwell, a supporter of Martin House entered the Hospice into the Beverley Building Society’s charity of the month competition in November. Together with other fundraisers for Martin House, Edna is keen to establish a Beverley Support Group for the Hospice.
