East Riding Continues To Be Hit By Cold Temperatures

The council’s 17-strong gritter fleet treated the precautionary network last night and carried out spot salting on higher grounds, as temperatures fell below freezing.

A treatment of the secondary network will take place this morning to get more roads opened up and free from snow and ice. Work also continues on some parts of the Wolds and higher ground, removing large accumulations of snow from some roads to provide access through.

Grounds and street sweeping staff are continuing to fill salt bins and top up salt piles for use by residents and clear ice and snow in high-pedestrian areas.

The Met Office has forecast cold temperatures and sporadic snow showers for today, with the possibility of up to 2cm falling in places.

Temperatures tonight will drop to -2C and any ground water, as a result of the brief thaw, will freeze again causing icy conditions on footpaths and roads.

John Skidmore, head of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “While we are seeing a slight reprieve with regards to snow, subzero temperatures overnight mean that ice is still a real problem, especially in untreated areas; so residents are urged to travel with extreme care due to the continued risk of ice.

“The council is continuing its round-the-clock operations, in accordance with its winter maintenance plan, but would urge residents to take care when out and about.

“We continue to advise motorists to only make essential journeys, drive to the conditions, allow extra time for travel and stay to the treated network, wherever possible.

“Forecasts for the week ahead indicate that conditions will continue to be similar. The council has healthy salt stocks at its depots and plans in place to continue to tackle conditions and keep the East Riding moving.”
