In spite of a delayed start and inclement weather, good progress has been made on the maintenance scheme in Saturday Market, Beverley, with the first phase of works concentrating on the repair and improvement of the York stone pavements.
To minimise disruption to residents and local businesses, the council’s contractor is carrying out the work on the footpaths in sections, with a substantial amount of work already completed along the pavement in front of Guest and Phillips jewellers.
Pavement and kerbing reconstruction works are currently taking place near The Grapes public house and Browns, which is likely to take around three weeks to complete. The contractor will then move on to the stretch in front of Café Nero and The King’s Head public house, which will include widening the pavement.
It is anticipated that work on the footpaths will be complete by early summer, when the focus of the scheme will move onto the market place, highway and Market Cross.
Nigel Leighton, director of environment and neighbourhood services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Since starting on site last month, work has proceeded swiftly and is, at present, a few days ahead of programme.
“The council is aware of the need to minimise disruption and has phased the scheme in order to mitigate the effects of these important maintenance works as much as possible.
“There is a noticeable improvement to the pavements in the areas already worked on and, when the scheme is complete early next year, will provide Beverley with a town centre that will maintain its status as one of the country’s most vibrant market towns.”
While the works are taking place, Yorkshire Water is planning to replace a damaged sewer between Toll Gavel and Dyer Lane, from mid-March, which will take around five to six weeks to complete.
The council is still finalising dates for further consultations with stakeholder groups about revisions, agreed between the council, English Heritage and the Beverley Civic Society, to make minor alterations to the scheme and take up and relay the cobble setts, which will be undertaken through the Beverley Area Community Partnership.
