Local MP Welcomes Fairer Deal On Energy Bills

Graham Stuart MP welcomed energy regulator, Ofgem’s recent reforms to the energy market, which see a simpler, clearer choice of tariffs for consumers trying to stay on top of their energy bills and pick the best option to suit their family.

The reforms aim to ensure consumers get the cheapest deal by requiring suppliers to send clear bills, as well as obliging them to give all their customers personalised information on the cheapest tariff. They will also restrict suppliers to offering four simple core tariffs per fuel type, making it easier for consumers to choose the best tariff for them.

Ofgem’s reforms will be in place by this summer. The Government’s Energy Bill will underpin these reforms and ensure all customers are getting the best deal on their energy bills by 2014.

Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness said, “I am pleased to see that practical, common sense steps are being taken to help consumers get the fairest deal. I know that my constituents are concerned about their energy bills and I am really pleased that action is being taken to make them as reasonable as possible.

“We’ve got to get the balance right in making the market work for consumers while supporting suppliers in running profitable businesses that will allow them to make the huge investments which the country desperately needs.”

“Those investments will only be made if companies are confident of getting their money back and not suffering political fallout every time they make a return for shareholders.”
