Local Mp Welcomes Thousands Of New Apprenticeships To East Yorkshire

Graham Stuart

As National Apprenticeship Week kicks off Graham Stuart MP has welcomed news that almost 4,000 people started apprenticeships in Beverley and Holderness in 2011/12. This represents an increase in the number of starts between 2010/11 and 2011/12 of 8.9%, meaning that Beverley and Holderness maintains one of the highest apprenticeship start-up rates in the country.

“With the world around us changing our young people must be given every opportunity to reach their full potential, and I think local people will welcome the news that the Conservatives have dramatically increased the number of apprenticeships on offer compared to the last Labour administration. Times are tough, but it’s important to recognise when progress is being made, and this is good news for young people who want to work hard and build a career for themselves.

The Coalition will fund a quarter of a million more apprenticeships than the last Government planned, and we are seeing the benefit of this with thousands of new start-ups in East Yorkshire. This news comes as we celebrate the positive impact that Apprenticeships have on individuals, businesses and the economy in National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from the 11th to the 15th March.

“Here in Beverley and Holderness we saw more over 25s start apprenticeships than in any other constituency in the UK. This is great news, but we must push on and make sure that everyone has access to the qualifications they require and training that is tailored to their needs. Whether you want to learn how to manage a warehouse, become a lawyer or accountant, train up as a chef, or pick up experience working on the high street – these apprenticeships offer every person the chance to fulfil their potential and build a successful career.

Our country has seen over a half a million people start apprenticeships in the last year, and Beverley and Holderness is right at the forefront of the drive to equip people to compete in an increasingly complex marketplace.”
