Beverley Folk Festival not only hosts a wealth of talent over its festival weekend in June, but it presents some of the finest artists around in its concerts throughout the year.
On 27th April it joins with its partner FRUIT to promote a concert featuring some of the best songwriters on the acoustic music scene. With two BBC Radio 2 Award winners (2012) on the bill, the concert looks set to be a stunning night.
Steve Tilston has been described as “a complete guitarist,” “a singer songwriter of rare talent” and “absurdly accomplished.” Forty years on and he is on as fine form as ever with no signs of slowing down. His album The Reckoning garnering him the “Best Original Song” accolade at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2012, plus invitations to appear on Later with Jools Holland, BBC Four’s Songwriters’ Circle and four-star reviews in the media.
Perhaps best known for his song-writing prowess, Steve is also a blinding, dazzling guitarist with a style echoing the elaborate rhythmic “folk baroque” of Bert Jansch and Davy Graham, but also drawing from classical, roots and the tradition to create a sound that has been called quintessentially Tilston. A popular artist on both the contemporary and folk scenes, he will no doubt attract his many fans to the event.
From the younger generation comes Lucy Ward who at 22 was the winner of the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk ‘Horizon Award 2012’. As well as playing guitar, ukulele and concertina she still considers her voice to be her first instrument. Her sets are an eclectic mix of traditional and modern folk interpretations along with her own original (award winning) songs.
Her ability to still an audience with the strength and purity of her voice and her breath-taking delivery, her genuine and sparkling personality, her own brand of banter, crowd participation and her stunning voice, have led her to wow her audiences wherever she performs! Her performance at FRUIT will be a “warm up” for her, no doubt, stunning appearance at the festival in June. Catch her first in Hull.
Launching off the evening and from nearby Pocklington comes Tom Morris. He has gained an international reputation for his song writing and performances. Having recently returned from touring in Russia with his band “Her name is Calla”, he will be performing at Fruit in his other guise as a strong solo performer.
For a taster of the festival and some great music, come along to FRUIT and see three talented artists for the price of one! A great night out.
