Rarely Performed Shostakovich Masterpiece Unites Local Musicians

On April 27th 2013, Dr. Rachel Poyser, Director of music at Wyke College and will conduct a performance of Shostakovich No. 5 in the glorious surroundings of Beverley Minster.

The symphony, which is an A level set work, is rarely performed and requires a much larger orchestra than the majority of schools could muster.

As Rachel wanted to provide an opportunity for her students to perform the piece themselves, she approached other musicians in the local community and the project now involves musicians from nine local Secondary schools, Wyke College, Hull University, Invitatione, Hull Philharmonic and Hessle Sinfonia.

With the youngest being only 11 years old and the oldest well into retirement, it has also proved popular with players of all ages.

“Having the opportunity to play the whole Symphony has really helped me learn the work inside out” said Amber Tatman, a violinist and A level music student at Beverley Joint Sixth.

The concert, which will also include musical items from Invitatione, Hull University, Wyke College, Beverley Joint sixth and the 2013 winners of ‘Minster’s got Talent’, is at Beverley Minster on Saturday, 27th April 2013 at 7.30 pm.
