More Business Mentors Needed For Capability Mentors

Capability Mentors urgently need to recruit more experienced business people to act as mentors for local people who are planning to start their own enterprise or who are in the early stages of running their own company.

Capability was set up a year ago and is a part of the Government’s national Mentorsme scheme. To date 15000 volunteer mentors have been recruited under this initiative which provides help and assistance for those unfamiliar with running a company.

Capability Mentors have 16 trained mentors working with people in Hull, Beverley and East Riding but urgently needs to recruit more to keep pace with local demand.

‘After a steady start, we are getting 2-3 new enquiries every week ‘,says Alan Clements . ‘Business mentors stay alongside clients to encourage and give wise counsel as they put their business plan together. There is no set timetable but mentoring will often continue for over 12 months. Meeting frequency depends on the project but a face to face meeting or a telephone meeting once a month is usually what is required.’

‘This is a valuable service to help people set up their own business and improve the chances of success. It is also an opportunity for experienced business people to use their skills assisting others. It is very rewarding for both sides.’

‘Working in a mentoring group gives support to our mentors. If they do not know all the answers, someone in the group can usually help in specialist areas.’
