Police Need More Common Sense Approach To Local Cycle Events Says MP

Beverley and Holderness MP, Graham Stuart, has contacted the recently elected Police Commissioner for Humberside, Matthew Grove, to ask for a review of new rules introduced by the police for cycle events across the area. This follows the cancellation of various cycle races after the police said they would not support them without road closures.

Graham said, “I’ve spoken to the Police Commissioner and asked him to get officers to look at the issue again. East Yorkshire hosts a huge number of cycle races, sportives and rides on country roads, with excellent voluntary marshalling and a long history of safety and success.

“I enjoy cycling myself and think it is something we want to encourage for leisure, commuting and sport. The cycle events in this area are good for people’s health and even the economy. I hope that some common sense can be brought to bear and that all the thousands of local riders and volunteers can go on with their sport unhindered by overregulation.”
