Town & Country Day At Bishop Burton College

Bishop Burton College’s annual Town & Country Day is bursting at the seams with things to see and do.

Staff and students are busy preparing for what is set to be the largest event yet, on Sunday 26 May. Town really will meet Country in a mixture of demonstrations and activities ranging from dance performances from local competitive group Streetbeatz, to traditional country skills such as falconry.

Other highlights include demonstrations on decorating Shire horses, ferret racing, a stuntman and stilt walker, performances from the EYMS Brass Band and a sevens rugby tournament. For those who prefer a quieter life, there will be hanging basket demonstrations, country crafts, hatching chicks and more. Children can enjoy games, crafts, face painting and competitions, including the chance to name the College’s two new otters.

Bishop Burton College Communications and Events Co-ordinator, Helena Barnett, is part of the team planning the day. She said,

“There are so many activities going on, we can guarantee there’s something for everyone from young children to grandparents. The best thing is that most of it is hands on, so people can really get involved, whether it’s meeting the animals or having a go at archery.”

Town & Country Day is planned to coincide with the British Eventing Horse Trials and this year the public will spot Olympic silver medal winner Nicola Wilson, who is bringing five horses, Beverley-based international rider Gary Parsonage, Swedish Event Team member Dag Albert and our own Ginny Turnbull, who is sponsored by Bishop Burton College.

Last year the overall day attracted 5,000 visitors and with a new transport system in place, this year looks set to be even busier. Visitors can beat the queues by using the free bus services running from Hull and York, as well as a park and ride system from Beverley Westwood.
