Sports Leadership Academy Granted To Local College

Bishop Burton College was officially awarded Sports Leadership Academy status at the College’s annual Sports Awards ceremony this week.

Students and staff gathered at the KC Stadium to celebrate the year’s successes and achievements across the spectrum of sport disciplines taught at the College, from football, rugby and horse riding to basketball, pentathlon and hockey.

It was a fitting moment for David Savage, National Development Officer for Sports Leaders UK, to present the award to College Principal Jeanette Dawson OBE. Mr Savage said, “Bishop Burton College’s staff go the extra mile to inspire students, support learning and community development.”

Organisations that students have volunteered their time for include: Federation of Disability Sports running Rugby, Football, Cross Country, Boccia and Athletic events; Hull Boys Sunday League Football (refereeing, coaching and medical support); Robin Hood Marathon (marshalling); Sports makers through the County Sports Partnership and supporting students with learning difficulties.

Shaun Cook, Subject Leader for Sport at the College, is proud of the lengths students go to in volunteering. He said, “The College not only delivers Sports Leaders UK’s awards and qualifications with high levels of success and enthusiasm, but also has a positive impact on the local community.

As a result of this award Bishop Burton College will act as a beacon of good practice to other organisations in their local area, offering a curriculum that is so much more than ‘just a sports leadership course’.”

Guests at the ceremony included Hull FC players Danny Houghton and Ben Galea, Hull FC owner Adam Pearson and Hull City Vice Chairman Ehab Allam. Houghton and Galea gave a talk and Q&A about their experiences of sport through school, college and as professionals.
