Beverley Town Cricket Club 1st XI took a maximum 30 points from their home game against Dunnington despite being on the receiving end of a superb unbeaten 152 from the visitor’s Collis King. Beverley’s own batting hero was opener Mike Cooke whose 90 not out played a major part in securing the win.
Town bowled well in order to contain King and a total of 228 for 5 was as much as the home side could have hoped for in the face of the late onslaught from the man who played such a significant role in the cricket World Cup Final of 1979. Jamie Roe was the most successful Town bowler returning a creditable 3 for 69 from his 15 overs at the Norwood Recreation Ground. Matthew Mudd (1-62) and Faisal Abid (1-18) were the other bowlers to have some reward for their efforts.
After Abid went in the first over Cooke and Jon Fisher put on 65 in quick time for the second wicket, Fisher dominating the partnership with 44 which included some excellent strokes. Olly Grantham (29) joined Cooke and they added 58 runs before Grantham was caught.
The run rate slowed as Town edged towards their target until Mudd (18) and skipper Alan Acklam (13no) provided some late impetus and the latter lofted a winning brace with just one ball of the match to spare. Town have now won three of their six league games this season and remain in fifth place in the Premier Division.
