Beverley Find Life Hard Against New Farnley Ladies

Beverley Town Ladies

Beverley welcomed last seasons champions to Norwood Recreation Ground on a glorious sunny afternoon and it was the visitors who won the toss and elected to bat.

The Beverley Team was again made up of several juniors who are beginning to get the experience of playing the longer 40 over games.

Amy Halloran (1 for45) led the attack with Beth Smith (2 for27) but it was not until Skipper Sarah McDowell (1 for 46) handed over the wicket keeping duties after the drinks break that Beverley got their first wicket but the West Yorkshire team had already scored 120. New Farnley’s top three, Cecelia Allen (61), Agness Firth (52) and Hollie Armitage (65) took advantage of an excellent batting track.

The Beverley fielders toiled in the hot conditions but some great performances from Alice Johnson, Alice Baily, Coutney Nichol and Charlie Cooper who kept wicket in the last 20 overs. The other Beverley youngsters, Ailish Ward, Megan Siddown and Helen Craig all bowled well without reward as New Farnley finished with 228 for 5.

In reply Beverley started well with Sarah McDowell (46) and Beth Smith (28) before the latter was run out with the score on 65. New Farnley then turned to their senior bowler Susanne White who bowled a spell of 8 overs for only 12 runs. This period killed off any chance of Beverley reaching the total despite a great effort from Helen Craig (35). The other batters tried hard in the final overs but wickets fell at regular intervals in the final overs as Beverley finished on 151 for 8.

This was the first defeat of the season for Beverley but coach Peter Todd was impressed how well the team did against very strong opposition,

‘Beverley did extremely well, against a team littered with current and ex Yorkshire players. Even their younger players are playing junior cricket for Yorkshire. Despite this we showed great potential but we need more experienced players if we are to compete with the likes of our visitors today.

All East Yorkshire clubs need to put more effort into producing girls teams or at least identifying players that can be pooled to form District Teams at Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15.

Beverley, Cottingham and Yapham are the only pro-active clubs supporting the Women & Girls Development Group, running teams and organising promotion day. Yapham are hosting a girls only on Sunday 16th June, from 2pm to 5pm and is open to all girls aged from 7 to 15, regardless of ability or previous experience.
