Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart gets on his bike to support the 5th Beverley Scout Group on their Exercise Bike Challenge at Tesco in Beverley.
The challenge forms part of the Scout Community Week activities and aims to raise money which will be shared between Tesco’s nominated charity Diabetes UK and 5th Beverley (Wesley) Scouts.
Graham said, “It is great to see young people getting involved in their local community and raising funds for a good cause at the same time. Later this week the group will be helping Beverley in Bloom to plant Station Square and will continue to maintain the planters and help keep the town looking beautiful this summer.
“The Scouts provide fabulous opportunities for young people, offering the chance to develop their skills, experiences and confidence. The 5th Beverley Scout Group currently has a waiting list for new members in all sections from Beavers through to Scouts and they need more volunteer leaders so that additional places can be offered.”
Denise Hartley; District Commissioner for Scouts in Beverley & Hornsea; was pleased that Graham was able to lend his support to Scouting in the area. She said “We really appreciate the support of our local MP and I’m thrilled that Graham was able to attend the Exercise Bike Challenge. It will really help us raise the profile of Scouting across the area and perhaps encourage more adults to come forward and volunteer a few hours of their time to help us continue our work.”
Group Scout Leader, Darren Burgess said, “Scouting continues to grow in popularity but unfortunately there are around 40,000 young people on waiting lists nationwide and locally we have far more enquiries than we have places available.”
“If we can attract more volunteers; we can open more sections and let more local boys and girls experience the benefits of Scouting. If you think that you could spare a few hours each month to help us then please give us a call on 0844 8808273 or e-mail beverleyandhornsea@humbersidescouts.org.uk.. Perhaps you were a member of a scout group when you were a child or you have a skill that you could share with young people.”
Graham added, “Since my accident in March I have had limited mobility, yet riding an exercise bike forms part of my daily physiotherapy schedule. I was delighted to be invited to something that I could get actively involved with.”
